PART 1

 

1. When shading these shapes, use LIGHT pressure and DO NOT smudge your values.

2. Slowly build darker values through gradual build up of strokes, patience is key here.

3. You can control the value of your strokes by holding closer to the eraser on your pencil to achieve lighter values, hold closer to the tip of the pencil to get a darker value.

4. NO LINES should be visible in the end. Aim for a smooth application of pencil strokes with slow, gradual shifts in tone.

5. Use a kneaded eraser to pull away dark areas where you wish to go lighter. Use gentle pressure!

PART 2

 

1. Copy the two images at the top of this page into a new file in Photoshop.

2. Now you will be shading the line drawing once again using Photoshop tools like the Paint Brush and Magic Wand.

3. Pick a grey color from the color picker on the tool bar OR use black and turn the opacity down while shading in each shape.

4. Change your Brush size to cover larger areas or to get a more detailed stroke. Don't forget about the cast shadows!

5. Submit your work as "LastName_FirstName_Shading.psd" to the FINISHED WORK folder.
